One of my greatest disappointments in ‘growing up’ was realizing how much we really don’t. You can look at some adults and sometimes easily tell who was the cry baby, the know it all, the spoiled child…the one who took their toys and went home when they didn’t get their way.
You can work in an office, school, store, restaurant, or even a church and youโll find the same thingโฆproof that some of us never really grow up. Many work places arenโt much different from high schoolโฆ
You have the so-calledโฆ
Popular/Cool kids
Nerds
Jocks
Preps
Bullies
Loners
You have those with aggravatingly high levels of โschool spiritโ and those who โsmoke in the bathroomโ and could care less…those who are โcompany peopleโ and those who spend most of their day in the designated smoking area.
You have those who โremind the teacher (boss) we have a testโ…those who canโt wait to remind the boss of that meeting that no one wanted to have.
You have those who are always late for class and never have their assignmentsโฆthose always late for work and hold up the process, the lineโฆprogress because they havenโt done their part.
You have the teacherโs petโฆthose who love โkissing the bosses behindโ trying to get noticed or get ahead, and you see it sometimes backfire on them at work just as it did in school.
You have those who keep their โdeskโ in perfect conditionโฆthose whose desk is an organized messโฆand those whose desk is a disaster area.
School should be a place where all children can go to learn in peace and safetyโฆbe challenged and enjoy rewarding friendships.
Our workplaces should be places where we can earn a living for ourselves or our families and be respected as adults.
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
Both school and workplaces are ruined by the same thingsโฆ
Selfishness
Immaturity
Over Ambition
Arrogance
Untrustworthy
Cliques
People who forget the real reason they’re at WORK.
God’s word tells us that we should always be mindful to treat others not only as we want to be treatedโฆ
Matthew 7:12 (NKJV)
12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
But, also better than ourselvesโฆ
Philippians 2:3 (NKJV)
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
God also expects us to do whatever it takes within us to get along with othersโฆ
Romans 12:18 (NKJV)
18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
The bible teaches us that God expects us to be โperfectโ. But, perfect in the bible does not mean without fault. It means โmatureโ (according to Strong’s Concordance Greek teleios means mature or consummated).
Matthew 5:48 (NKJV)
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect
Philippians 3:15 (NKJV)
15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.
When youโre in fourth grade, you should be at that proper level of developmentโฆintellectually, emotionally, behaviorally and socially. You arenโt expected to be in the fourth grade on an eight grade levelโฆor vice versa. If you are on your appropriate level of development, according to the bible you are ‘perfect’ or mature.
The problem is that in our workplacesโฆtoo many people remained at the ‘forth grade’ level even though they have moved to ‘high school’. God expects us to grow up.
If we take Godโs work serious enough in our homes to instill it within our children, we will find our schools much better places to learn, which will create adults who make our workplaces better places to work.
Let me first say that I absolutely believe that God gives us the right to arm ourselves as individuals. Notice what Yeshua, Jesus, told His disciples…
Luke 22:35-36 (NKJV)
35 And He said to them, โWhen I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?โ
So they said, โNothing.โ
36 Then He said to them, โBut now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
The Lord told His own disciples that if they don’t have a weapon they should get one…to defend themselves. Jesus made this clear when Peter used His sword when Jesus was arrested.
Matthew 26:51-52 (NKJV)
51And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, โPut your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will [a]perish by the sword.
John 18:10-15 (NKJV)
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priestโs servant, and cut off his right ear. The servantโs name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, โPut your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?โ
However, even if God permits us to arm ourselves, just as He doesn’t want us to put our faith in riches, He also doesn’t want us to put our faith in our guns…as if they are what insures our salvation when attacked.
Psalm 33:16-18 (NKJV)
16 No king is saved by the multitude of an army; A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. 17 A horse is a [a]vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy,
Psalm 44:6-8 (NKJV)
6 For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me. 7 But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us. 8 In God we boast all day long, And praise Your name forever. Selah
Remember God delivered Israel from Egypt without one weapon. He fought for them.
Remember also, though out numbered, God fought for Judah because Jehoshaphat put his faith in God…
2 Chronicles 20:15-23 (NKJV)
15 And he said, โListen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: โDo not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but Godโs. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the [a]brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!โ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.โ
18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. 19 Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.
20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, โHear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.โ 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:
โPraise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever.โ
22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. 23 For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they [b]had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.
In Joshua’s farewell address, He reminded the Israel of the real source of their help…
Joshua 23:8-10 (NKJV)
8 but you shall hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day. 9 For the Lord has [a]driven out from before you great and strong nations; but as for you, no one has been able to stand against you to this day. 10 One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.
Too many people in our society have prioritized their weapons over what’s more important to the Lord…just as when Yeshua rebuked the Pharisees of neglecting compassion while prioritizing their tithes…
Matthew 23:23 (NKJV)
23 โWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
There are some people who quickly react when they feel their guns are threatened, but are silent when it comes to JUSTICE, MERCY and FAITH.
Just as God allowed Israel and Judah to be taken into captivity, God can allow GUNS TO BE TAKEN and loss of freedom because of PRIDE, ARROGANCE, COMPROMISE, COMPLACENCY, ASSIMILATION, and SPIRITUAL ADULTERY! Thatโs why God saidโฆ
2 Chronicles 7:14ย (NKJV)
14ย if My people who areย called by My name willย humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,ย then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
The most powerful weapon we have is the word of God. That’s what Jesus used to resist the devil while He was in the wilderness. The word of God is more powerful than any weapon ever made…
Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
12ย For the word of Godย isย living and powerful, andย sharper than anyย two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and isย a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Remember God’s promise through the Prophet Isaiah…
Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV)
17ย No weapon formed against you shallย prosper, And every tongueย whichย rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. Thisย isย the heritage of the servants of theย Lord, And their righteousnessย isย from Me,โ Says theย Lord.
It’s very easy to take our blessings for granted. Especially the blessings that some of us might call ‘the little things’…like water.
Plenty of water…
Clean water…
Available water…
Anytime you want it.
There are many people in this world who consider clean water to be a luxury.
There are many people in this world who bathe and drink from the same water that animals drink from.
They just want clean, easily accessible water to drink and bathe in.
But, so many of us don’t only have plenty of water to drink, we can sometimes catch ourselves saying “There’s nothing here to drink,” if there is no juice, soda, wine, beer, or Kool-Aid in the house because we don’t want water.
So many of us have enough water to water our lawns.
So many of us have enough water to wash our cars.
So, the next time you get ready to wash your car or drive through a car wash, stop and thank God for enough water for this task that could be considered by those who don’t have enough as vain.
Then say a prayer for those who can’t go to the faucet and turn on the fresh, clean water.
Exodus 17 (NKJV)
17 Then all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, โGive us water, that we may drink.โ
So Moses said to them, โWhy do you contend with me? Why do you tempt the Lord?โ
3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said, โWhy is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?โ
4So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, โWhat shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone[a] me!โ
5And the Lord said to Moses, โGo on before the people, and take with yousome of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.โ
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 So he called the name of the place Massah[b] and [c]Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they [d]tempted the Lord, saying, โIs the Lord among us or not?โ
Let me preface this piece by saying this piece is not addressing dangerous, abusive relationships.
We all encounter people who ‘get on our nerves’. We all have people in our families, workplaces, and even churches who love to cause trouble, drama and who cause us high levels of stress and anxiety.
Some people have a chronic propensity to bring negativity to every interaction.
One of the most common and seemingly practical pieces of advice is to remove the people toxic people from our lives…but does the Bible support that teaching?
It sounds good in blog posts, self help books, sermons, and motivational speeches, but how does God expect us to handle the situation?
Notice that God told Ezekiel that He was sending Him to…well a nation of ‘toxic people’.
Ezekiel 2:3-5 (NKJV)
3 And He said to me: โSon of man, I am sending you to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me; they and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. 4 For they are[a]impudent and stubborn children. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, โThus says the Lord God.โ 5 As for them, whether they hear or whether they refuseโfor they are a rebellious houseโyet they will know that a prophet has been among them.
God equipped Ezekiel for the challenge, and He is trying to equip us…
Ezekiel 3:7-9 (NKJV)
7 But the house of Israel will not listen to you, because they will not listen to Me; for all the house of Israel are[a]impudent and hard-hearted. 8 Behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads. 9 Like adamant stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not be afraid of them, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.
Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus Christ, sent His disciples into ‘toxic situations’…
Matthew 10:16 (NKJV)
16 โBehold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless[a] as doves.
The fact is that Jesus gave us instructions for how to handle people who intentionally antagonize us…
Matthew 5:44 (NKJV)
44 [a]But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
Notice that the Lord didn’t say avoid your enemies, block those who curse you, and remove those who spitefully use and persecute you from your life.
God expects us to strong enough to be light, and a positive spiritual influence to those who are ‘toxic’. The very person or persons that you have decided to eliminate from you life might have been specifically sent into your life to benefit from your light.
Let’s say you’re one of those people on social media who announce they are unfriending or blocking the ‘negative or messy’ people from their lives. These are people who haven’t unfriended or blocked you from their lives, even though they may be sometimes annoyed by your passion or love for God. You may be the only light they see in a sea of the craziness on social media.
God expects us to be strong and grow in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, gentleness, self-control and faithfulness enough so we can represent His glory and image in every relationship and interaction.
This is when what God told us through the apostle Paul is the most powerful…
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
13 I can do all things through [a]Christ who strengthens me.
Before you get rid of someone toxic, why not pray for the strength, wisdom and patience to be a blessing to them?
What if Jesus had decided to reject the negative people in His earthly ministry?
Before you block their calls, what if blocked yours?
How many times have you heard that? How many times have you said that? But, too many times our behavior doesn’t align with that affirmation.
The reason is that people do horrible things to hurt one another. We have all done something to give someone else a reason but not an excuse to hate us. We have all had people do things to hurt us: our loved ones, people who we care about, a group of people to which we belong, or people who we feel couldn’t defend themselves.
Many people have been neglected, abused, overlooked, bullied, betrayed, cheated, discriminated against, injured….even had loved ones murdered.
But God still demands in no uncertain terms that we love EVERYONE!
Matthew 5:43-48 (NKJV)
43 โYou have heard that it was said, โYou shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.โ 44 [a]But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your [b]brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the [c]tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
But, sometimes people cross that line to do something to behave in a way that makes our spirits ache!
We know what God requires and say that we still love them, but God knows that’s not what’s really in our hearts.
In our hearts we want to see them hurt.
In our hearts we want to see them embarrassed.
In our hearts we want to see them punished.
In our hearts we want to see them put to shame.
If we aren’t careful, in our hearts we want to see them dead.
And, sometimes in our hearts we can want to see them condemned to hell.
The bible tells us to examine ourselves…
2 Corinthians 13:5 (NKJV)
5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?โunless indeed you [a]are disqualified.
1 Corinthians 11:28-29 (NKJV)
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks [a]in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the [b]Lordโs body.
The devil, the enemy, the accuser of the Saints wants to convince you that someone has done something so horrible, that their character, attitude and behavior are so bad that they deserve to be hated.
That’s condemnation. That’s judgement. And, that’s reserved for God. The Word of God is very clear in how we are to respond to people our flesh wants to hate…
2 Corinthians 13:5(NKJV)
5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Doyou not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?โunless indeed you [a]are disqualified.
So ask yourself…”Who has the devil convinced me to hate, I just haven’t admitted to myself?”
Donald Trump?
Derek Chauvin?
Al Sharpton?
Barack Obama?
Colin Kaepernick?
Your boss?
Your ex-husband or wife?
The person who abused your son or daughter?
The person who murdered someone you love?
I know it’s not easy, but God doesn’t allow us to hate them. He doesn’t love them any less than He loves us. He created them in His image too. And, He wants them to be reconciled to Him too. It’s our responsibility to pray for that and work for that. Once your enemy truly repents and becomes reconciled to Him, he or she is no longer God’s enemy…and they are no longer your enemy. Do you really pray for those who you feel don’t deserve prayer?
2 Peter 3:9 (NKJV)
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward [a]us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NKJV)
18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not [a]imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christโs behalf, be reconciled to God.
So I challenge you to be honest and ask yourself, “Do I hate anyone?”
If so, ask God to forgive you for hating them and repent by refusing to feed and fuel your anger towards them.
Then, call out their names every day and pray for them.
Pray for God to soften their hearts.
Pray for God to kill any bad seeds thatโs been planted inside them and give increase to any good seeds… seeds of faith in God through Yeshua the Messiah, seeds of repentance, seeds of salvation, and seeds of fellowship with God and a life of bearing much good fruit for Him.
3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, โIs it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?โ
4 And He answered and said to them, โHave you not read that He who [a]made them at the beginning โmade them male and female,โ 5 and said, โFor this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one fleshโ? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.โ
God also makes it clear that He HATES divorce…
Malachi 2:16 (NKJV)
16 โFor the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers oneโs garment with violence,โ Says the Lord of hosts. โTherefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.โ
However, as stated above, people divorce for many different reasons…
Money…
‘Growing apart’…
Careers…
Unequally yoked…
Irreconcilable differences…
And of course…
ADULTERY.
God also clearly says that if one divorces his or her spouse for a reason other than that which God allows commits adultery and causes the one he or she marries to commit adultery…period.
Many Ministers quickly say they would not officiate a homosexual wedding, as I wouldn’t, but I also ask heterosexual couples if they were previously married, and if so, why they got divorced.
Matthew 5:31-32 (KJV)
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Matthew 19:7-9 (KJV)
7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
1 Corinthians 7:10-11 (NKJV)
10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.
That’s very strong and very clear. In God’s view, if one puts away their spouse they are bound. Entering into another marriage is viewed by God as adulterous.
So, ask yourself. Does God accept your marriage, or are you living in adultery?
But, what about the spouse that has been put away and wanted to stay married? Are they bound?
1 Corinthians 7:15 (NKJV)
15 But if the unbeliever departs, let himdepart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.
Here the Apostle Paul is talking about an unbeliever leaving a believing spouse, but it makes it clear that if your spouse leaves you, then you are not bound. (Please read all of 1 Corinthians Chapter 7 for context).
This is a difficult subject, but one that is not discussed enough. God is clear in His word, and He does not expect us to justify fitting it to our will, but we are to submit to His.
So, is adultery when the spouse has asked for forgiveness an excuse for divorce? For more on that topic, read this…
If there’s one consistency between both the Old and New Testaments, it’s the fact that names matter to God. From God changing Abram’s name to Abraham to Yeshua changing Simon’s name to Peter (Cephas).
In an age when so many in the Body of Christ are politicizing sins that society considers BIG, while excusing those they consider small, the bible is clear that God takes how we identify ourselves very seriously…
Not many Christians are quick to name their children, Satan or Lucifer.
Why?
Because those names are used to identify the enemy, the accuser of the saints…the devil.
That’s why I don’t understand that while Christians are so passionately ‘campaign’ against the so-called BIG sins, why they never speak up against teams, many of which they allow their children to be a part of, that identify themselves with a devil.
They wear sports paraphernalia, fly flags, display bumper ‘stickers’ and worst of all cheer for, root for, in a sense ‘praise’…and glorify THE DEVILS!
Right now someone reading this knows in their heart it’s not right, but they are naturally inclined to do what Christians do when they want to continue doing something…look for reasons to justify it.
Do you think God is cool with you allowing your child to be identified as a ‘devil’?
Do you think God is okay with allowing a school, AAU team, or professional team to be identified as the DEVILS? The RED DEVILS? The BLUE DEVILS? etc.?
Names matter so much go God that He demands we be baptized in the NAME of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Here name doesn’t mean the combination of consonants and vowels that make up ‘Yeshua’, ‘Jesus’, ‘Emmanuel’, Adonai, or even Ruach ha-kodesh (Holy Spirit). Names denote authority, character…who you are, or what it is. Think about the fact that God changed Jacob’s name to Israel.
Think about the fact that most Christians are content with calling a day chosen to commemorate Yeshua’s (Jesus’s) death, burial, and resurrection by a pagan goddess’s name (Easter), which is the same as (Eostre, Ishtar, Ashtoreth) one of the very names He forbid us to make mention of, one of the very names that Israel and Judah invoked (said) and provoked God to anger.
7 and lest you go[a] among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause anyone to swear by them; you shall not serve them nor bow down to them,
Names matter, so we should stop trivializing what is important to Him.
I once worked with a lady who cleaned up our office building. Letโs say her name is Elsie.
She was middle aged, older than some and younger than others, and she was Black.
Out of respect most people in the office called her Ms. Elsie. Except me, I called her Elsie. She was my Elder, but I sensed she didnโt like the title Ms. before her name.
I asked several people, Black, White and other races why they called her that, and they confirmed it was out of respect.
So, I asked Elsie how she felt about it. She also confirmed she didnโt like it, and it was exactly for the reason I thought.
She was our coworker. Even though she wasnโt a Manager, Analyst, Salesperson, Director, VP, or CEO, she was a coworker. There were other coworkers older than her, of all races, that were referred to by their first name only.
Calling her MS. unintentionally designated her as a servant. It made her feel like a MAMMY.
I told everyone to please just call her by her first name like everyone else.
So many times we can mean well, but unintentionally insult, disrespect, and belittle others because we are culturally insensitive.
As we come upon the season of celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Iโm compelled to share what He placed in my heart years agoโฆmy annual reminder.
John 4:24 proclaims that God is a spirit and we are commanded to worship Him in Spirit and Truthโฆ.Spirit and Truth.
God also commanded in Joshua 23:7 that we are not to make mention of or swear by the names of pagan gods, particularly those that were worshiped by the people who surrounded Israel.
Joshua 23: (NKJV)
7 and lest you go among these nations, these who remain among you. You shall not MAKE MENTION OF THE NAME of their gods, nor cause anyone to swear by them; you shall not serve them nor bow down to them,
Some of those names were Baal and Ashtoreth (Judges 2:12-15). One of Israelโs greatest sins was when they โdid evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and Asherahsโ(Judges 3:7).
Well here we are in the 21st Century and the enemy knows you love the Lord and he canโt get you to reject Him for an idol, but he did cleverly find a way to defile our worship and get us to commit blasphemy every time we refer to the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Yeshua, Jesus Christ.
In fact, if you ask why do we call the celebration of our Lord, Easter, many Christians will admit they don’t know or have never even thought about it.
The name Easter is derived from the name of an Anglo-Saxon/Norse goddess named Ostre or Eostre. This is the same โgoddessโ that God forbade Israel to mention her name. The name is different in different culturesโฆAstarte, Ishtar, wife of Baal, Ashoreth, Aphrodite, Easter.
Even though the names are different, in all of these cultures โsheโ was worshiped as a fertility goddess.
What were some of the symbols of her worship?
Yes, you already knowโฆeggs, and rabbits.
What better way for Satan to convince well-meaning Christians to disobey God by convincing them that they are depriving their children of some joy to keep these symbols alive for thousands of years.
The name Easter has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus. It doesnโt even remotely make sense, but you canโt get well-meaning Christians to stop using it because itโs so ingrained in the way we think (head) and the way we do things (hands) (Revelations 13:16). Remember that God warned us through the apostle John that the spirit of the antichrist was already here and working (1 John 4:3, 2 Thessalonians 2:7).
Revelation 13:16(NKJV)
16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads,
But some may say it doesnโt matter what you call the celebration of His resurrection as long as you know the meaningโฆ
Think of all of the names God changed in the bible. Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Paul etcโฆ
If names donโt matter then why wonโt most men take their wifeโs maiden name when they marry?
If names don’t matter what man would allow his wife to keep her ex-husbands last name?
If names donโt matter, then why is it important for us to be called by our name correctly?
Don’t you prefer being called by your own name?
Mary and Joseph were commanded to name Maryโs son Jesus, Yeshua, because He will save his people from their sins (Jesus, Joshua, Yeshua all mean Savior, God Saves or God, Yahweh is salvation, but that is a different discussion).
Names matter!
Using the name of another goddess to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and convincing Christians to defile his worship with symbols of her worship is blasphemy, and it is in direct rebellion to what God commanded us NOT to do (Joshua 23:7).
In fact, when you think about it, calling it EASTER Sunday is no different from calling it, Mohammed Sunday or Buddha Sunday.
Let me be clear.
I think itโs a wonderful thing to celebrate His death, burial and resurrection, but we must do it in Spirit and Truth.
Call it Resurrection Day, Resurrection Celebration, Jesus Lives Day you donโt even HAVE to celebrate it at allโฆbut please letโs STOP calling it Easter.
Because names matter to us, and they matter to God.
Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)
17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
We have wayyyyyyyyyyy too many ‘cussing’ Christians!
Our words are so powerful. Their ability to influence and shape our world is confirmed in the word of God.
Proverbs 11:9 (NKJV)
9 The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.
Proverbs 15:1 (NKJV)
15 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
Proverbs 16:24 (NKJV)
24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.
Mark 11:23 NKJV For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, โBe removed and be cast into the sea,โ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
And, just as much as they have the power to influence, our words also reveal what’s inside of us…
Matthew 12:34 (NKJV)
34 Brood[a] of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
It’s even with our words that we acknowledge and accept God’s gift of salvation…
Romans 10:10 (NKJV)
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
So, God holds those who believe in Him through His Son and our Savior Yeshua (Jesus Christ) accountable for each and everyone of our words…
His expectations of us are very high…
Matthew 12:36 (NKJV)
But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
Ephesians 4:29 NIV Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
That’s why it’s catastrophic when Christians curse, cuss, insult, use vulgar, profane or unclean language!
Too many times, you can’t tell the difference in those in the Body of Christ and those who aren’t by how they talk.
Too many times, Christians choose to express their emotions through words that are displeasing to God.
Too many times, Christians use insults when they disagree.
Too many times, Disciples of Christ allow coaches and those in authority to ‘curse’ their children.
I’ve seen too many of our leaders curse in public and those who call themselves Christians cheer, celebrate and find reasons to justify it.
Too many times people who claim to represent God equate cursing to ‘strong words’ or assertiveness.
What does God consider unclean words?
James 3:10 (NKJV)
10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
What does God consider ‘cursing’?
KJV Dictionary Definition: damn
damn
DAMN, v.t.
1. To sentence to eternal torments in a future state; to punish in hell.
2. To condemn; to decide to be wrong or worthy of punishment; to censure; to reprobate.
He that doubteth is damned if he eat. Rom xiv
3. To condemn; to explode; to decide to be bad, mean, or displeasing, be hissing or any mark of disapprobation; as, to damn a play, or a mean author.
4. A word used in profaneness; a term of execration.
Our words can either bless or curse. Our words can either encourage or discourage. Our words can either breathe life into a room…or suck it out!
Words can totally destroy or testimony and credibility as a Christian.
When you curse someone, it isn’t ‘harmless’.
YOU ARE RELEASING SOMETHING…
YOU ARE GIVING SOMETHING…
When you say, “God bless you!”…You’re giving a BLESSING!
When you say, “Damn you!” or “I’ll be damned!”, or even “Go to hell!”…YOU’RE GIVING A CURSE!
We know that Peter denied Christ, but that wasnโt the only sin he committed. Peter committed many other sins, but we donโt know what they were. God allowed them to remain secret.
We know that the Paul persecuted the church. We know that He said…
Romans 7:19 (NKJV)
19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
…but we don’t know exactly what that evil was.
Remember, we also know that Paul had a thorn in the flesh, but God allowed it to remain secret…
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, โMy grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.โ
Every personality God used in the bible committed some sins that God allowed to remain secret. Yes, we are supposed to confess our faults to one another (James 5:16), but that doesnโt mean you have to tell ALL of your business in every detail. Some people will compel you to do so, not out of concern for you, but to satisfy their curiosity.
Yes, some people are just nosey.
WE HAVE ALL DONE THINGS WE ARE ASHAMED OF…
There are some things that you have done, and truly repented, that no one knows about. You may have squandered money or relationships in your past, but now you aren’t that person anymore. You may have struggled with depression to the point you considered suicide, but you’re far beyond that now. You may have made some poor choices with your body, but that’s not you anymore. You may have had a problem with porn, but that’s now the last thing on your mind. Arenโt you glad God allowed those things to remain secret? The next time a public figure is exposed for something shameful, before you jump on the bandwagon of pointing a self-righteous finger, think of how thankful you are that God allowed your shameful moment(s) to be secret.
And, if youโre presently involved in some shameful behavior… STOP IT NOW!
STOP IT NOW!
Stop it before God makes you stop it. One sure way to make some shameful behavior stop is to expose it. Stop and give God some specific praise today if He has allowed some of your SECRETS to remain SECRET. Because not only is He a PROMISE KEEPER….HE’S a SECRET KEEPER TOO.
I was ordained into the ministry back in 1996, and I take my assignment very seriously.
Even though I was ordained in a Baptist church I prefer to be simply referred to as a Disciple of Christ (Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus).
There are many titles by which people address ministers, one of which is Reverend. Personally, I prefer NOT to be called by that title. Here are 5 reasons why.
1. HOLY AND REVEREND IS ‘HIS’ NAME
Psalm 111:9 (KJV)
9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name
Psalm number 119 in the King James Version states that God’s name is holy and ‘reverend’. The word reverend in the passage comes from the Hebrew word ‘Yare’, which means to fear, revere, be afraid, to stand in awe of, be awed. Neither I nor my name are not to be feared, revered, afraid or in awe of…that is reserved for God. I also know that one definition of blasphemy is putting oneself equal to God, of which is what the Pharisees often falsely accused the Lord. I prefer not for my name nor myself to be made in anyway imply equality to God…especially as a religious title.
2. GOD WARNED US ABOUT RELIGIOUS TITLES
Yeshua hurled a long list of rebukes and woes at the religious leaders in Matthew 23, one of which directly addressed religious titles…
Matthew 23:6-11 (NKJV)
6 They love the [a]best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, โRabbi, Rabbi.โ 8 But you, do not be called โRabbiโ; for One is your [b]Teacher, [c]the Christ, and you are all brethren. 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
The Lord clearly rebukes the religious leaders concerning being called RABBI, FATHER, or even TEACHER (which could be equated to Dr. today) however we know that even though REVEREND wasn’t a religious title of that day, but originated in the Catholic church that it is still within the context of that rebuke. I have heard some people contend, we call our male parents father, but that’s not a religious title. No matter how we may try to excuse or justify it, it’s still easier to just leave it alone.
3. THE APOSTLES ONLY REFERRED TO ONE ANOTHER BY NAME
When you read the letters of the Apostles, you will notice how they referred to themselves, one another and other elders and church leaders only by name. They didn’t refer to each other as Apostle, Rabbi, Father, Pope or any other title, but simply by name…
2 Peter 3:15 (NKJV)
15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvationโas also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,
James 1:1 (NKJV)
James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.
Timothy 1 (NKJV)
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,
2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
Titus 1:4 (NKJV)
4 To Titus, a true son in our common faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and [a]the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
Revelation 1:9 (NKJV)
9 I, John, [a]both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
I could go on and on, but I invite you to please go back and read through the epistles and notice how the apostles referred to one another and other church leaders…by name only, or brother.
4. THE APOSTLES REFUSED TO BE ‘WORSHIPED’
Acts 14:11-15 (NKJV)
11 Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, โThe gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!โ 12 And Barnabas they called [a]Zeus, and Paul, [b]Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out 15 and saying, โMen, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,
Acts 10:25-26 (NKJV)
25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him.26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, โStand up; I myself am also a man.โ
Even though the bible says that honor should be given to those who are ministers of the Gospel, there is still a thin line between honor and worship. It’s very easy to allow people to ‘feed our egos’ if we aren’t careful. It’s easy for honor and respect to morph into worship.
5. THE ANGELS DIDN’T ALLOW MEN TO WORSHIP THEM
When John received The Revelation of Yeshua he was in such great awe of the angle that he attempted to bow down to him, but the angel quickly told him NO…
Revelation 19:10 (NKJV)
10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, โSee that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.โ
Revelation 22:9 (NKJV)
9 Then he said to me, โSee that you do not do that.[a]For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.โ
Yes, the bible says that elders are worthy of double honor, but that doesn’t mean that we should accept that what is reserved for God.
1 Timothy 5:17 (NKJV)
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.
As I said earlier, as much as some leaders can justify being called REVEREND or being put on a pedestal…I would rather just leave it alone.
One of the most heartbreaking things is to have the adult children that you raised, love, nurtured and sacrificed not to appreciate youโฆresent youโฆavoid you…or even rebel against you.
It could be for any number of reasons:
Mistakes youโve made in raising them (weโve all made them)โฆ
They have a step-parent that was able to do more for them than youโฆ
The inability to provide some of the things they wantedโฆ
When they feel you have favored siblings over themโฆ
They blame you for their problems or issuesโฆ
Your best just wasnโt good enough for themโฆ
Resenting you for disciplining themโฆ
Comparing you to other parentsโฆ
You know the reason(s), or you may not know.
It may be your fault, or it may not be your fault.
King Davidโs son Absalom wanted to kill his father because he wanted his throne (2 Samuel 15), but David never stopped loving his son and mourned greatly for him when he was killed (2 Samuel 18). This rebellion was a part of the consequences of Davidโs sin (2 Samuel 12:10), but it still didnโt lessen his love for his son.
How do you deal with the pain of having a child you love so dearly resent you, when thereโs nothing you can say or do to change their heart?
How do you have peace?
The answers are really quite simple:
Apologize for any mistakes that youโve made, then itโs between them and God…
Forgive yourself for your mistakes…
Learn to be at peace when you know that you’ve done your best…
THEN…
You have to focus on the days when they DID appreciate you. Think back on the days when they were infants…toddlers…small children…the days when they couldnโt get enough of you. Look back on the pictures or videos of those days. Go get that old toy or outfit you may have keptโฆmeditate on those wonderful memories. Those days then were just as real as the present.
Unfortunately, there are some children, adult children, who never come around. David never had his love for Absalom reciprocated after his heart turned against his father. David had to look back on the good memories with his son to sustain him.
Thatโs one of the reasons God gives us memoriesโฆsometimes thatโs what we need to sustain us in a troubled present and in situations where there is realistically โno hopeโ to change the situation (such as after Absalom died).
If you have a child that doesnโt appreciate youโฆresents you, or even says that they hate youโฆ
Pray for them,
Pray for God to restore your relationship,
Let them know that you are always there for them,
And, hold in your heart the good times to sustain youโฆbecause sometimes thatโs all you can do.
Remember that God has children that don’t appreciate Him too.
The enemy, the evil one, the devil has been an adversary against the children of God for a long time, and quite frankly, he is good at what he does.
One of his most successful tactics is using us against one another to provoke one another to sin.
2 Corinthians 2:10-11 (NKJV)
10 Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For [a]if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.
One of his favorite tactics to use us against one another is to provoke us to insult one another.
Why?
Because insults do no physical or spiritual harm to us…
INSULTS ARE BOTH A ‘FRUIT’ OF AN ATTACK ON OUR PRIDE!
And, we all know that God still considers pride to be an abomination equal to many of the sins that we consider to be ‘greater’…
Proverbs 6:16-19 (NKJV)
16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to [a]Him: 17 A[b] proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
One of the greatest signs of spiritual maturity and conforming to the image of Christ is when we can endure insults without responding. God demands it, and it stops an altercation immediately.
Here are 3 biblical reasons that we should NEVER respond to an insult with another insult.
1. INSULTS LEAD TO ETERNAL PUNISHMENT
Yeshua the Messiah, Jesus Christ, made it very clear that hurling insults such as fool, moron, dull or stupid is in danger or ‘hell fire’…
Matthew 5:22 (NKJV)
22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother [a]without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, โRaca!โ[b] shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, [c]โYou fool!โ shall be in danger of [d]hell fire.
2. AN INSULT IS A JUDGEMENT
An insult is a verbal expression of what we have judged in our hearts. This is dangerous because when we judge someone, we open ourselves up to the same judgement…
Matthew 7:1-2 (NKJV)
7 โJudge[a] not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what [b]judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
3. AN INSULT IS THE OPPOSITE OF A BLESSING (A CURSE)
God made it clear that we are to speak blessings on those who hurt us and our enemies. We are to NEVER curse them. You don’t have to use profanity to speak a ‘curse’ on someone. All you have to do is insult them.
4. God IMPLICITLY FORBADE THAT WE INSULT ONE ANOTHER
God clearly forbade us from insulting one another. The fact is that when we insult one another, we are insulting God Himself, because we were all created in His image. God feels that whatever we do to the ‘least’ of men or women…we do it to Him…
Matthew 25:37-40 (NKJV)
37 โThen the righteous will answer Him, saying, โLord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?โ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, โAssuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.โ
1 Peter 3:9 (NLT)
9 Donโt repay evil for evil. Donโt retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.
James 3:10 (NKJV)
10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
5. GOD ALLOWS UNBELIEVERS TO INSULT, MOCK & BLASPHEME HIM EVERY DAY & DOES NOT STRIKE THEM DOWN…YET.
Everyday atheist and even some believers insult, mock, and blaspheme God, yet not only does He NOT strike them down, but He allows them to enjoy His sun, His rain, His air, the abundance of life and the energy to pursue their own will. God doesn’t strike them down. God has given us warning about the consequences of blaspheming Him, but He is still patient in releasing His righteous indignation. Even Jesus left us this example. If He can wait for vindication…so can we.
1 Peter 2:23 (NLT)
23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.
Matthew 26:65-68 (NKJV)
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, โHe has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! 66 What do you think?โ They answered and said, โHe is deserving of death.โ 67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with [a]the palms of their hands, 68 saying, โProphesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?โ
Isaiah 53:7 (NKJV)
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
Matthew 5:44-45 (NKJV)
44 [a]But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Romans 12:14-21 (NKJV)
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have[a] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, โVengeance is Mine, I will repay,โ says the Lord. 20 ThereforeโIf your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.โ21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
So the next time that someone insults you, don’t fall into the trap of the enemy. Use it as an opportunity to release the love of God from inside you…bless them, sincerely.
Let me say first that I’m not excusing adultery, fornication or any other sexual sin. These sins also result from an innate, natural desire that we don’t ask for, and people make a choice to commit these sins based on that desire.
However, there are many people who are now trying to defend homosexuality by saying that Jesus never addressed it, or forbade it. They say only the Apostle Paul addressed it, and some even try to contend that he wasn’t really talking about homosexuality.
I’m going to keep this short and sweet.
We all know there are several sins that Jesus never directly addressed…
Rape…
Incest…
Domestic Abuse…
Bestiality…
Gossip…
Jealousy…
To name a few.
Jesus didn’t even say directly that getting drunk is a sin. It was indirect.
He did address marriage, fornication adultery and divorce.
And, no one disputes that the LORD only permits sex within marriage.
In Matthew Chapter 19, Jesus repeated what He Himself said as The Living Word in Genesis 5:2 , yes He was there in the beginning (Elohim, the name for God in Genesis is a plural noun)… Matthew 19:4-5(NKJV)
4 And He answered and said to them, โHave you not read that He who made[a] them at the beginning โmade them male and female,โ[b]5 and said, โFor this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one fleshโ?[c]
The context of the conversation here is marriage and divorce. Jesus specifically calls out MALE and FEMALE in the context of marriage. This is not a cherry picked scripture. It is Jesus in perfect harmony with what God established in the beginning.
Jesus clearly says let HIM (male) be joined to his WIFE (female), because some try to contend, ‘who says that a wife has to be a woman’.
This undeniably defines marriage as between a man and woman.
These verses (Genesis and Matthew) define marriage as between a man and woman. And, since God only permits sex within marriage, sex with any partner, heterosexual or homosexual is sin.
So yes, without saying the word ‘homosexuality’, Yeshua, Christ Jesus addressed it. Any other conclusion is conjecture…reaching…trying to fit a square peg into a triangular slot.
Most of us lead very busy lives. How many times have you thought, said or heard someone say…I don’t have time to read, or study my bible, pray or go to church?
How many feel that God happily accepts being an after thought or ignored?
How many feel it’s okay to say you believe, but never live like God is real or like they are in true relationship with Him?
How many people say through…
Jobs…
Careers…
Family…
Organizations…
Youth Sports and Activities…
Even church activities…
That they don’t have time for God, prayer, reading and studying their bible or worship?
The truth is that God doesn’t give us blessings to replace Him.
Our blessings should never become barriers or burdens to our relationship with Him.
Here are a few simple, easy suggestions to carve out quality time with God.
1. WHEN YOU CAN’T SLEEP AT NIGHT
We all have those nights when we canโt sleep. You may not even necessarily be worried. You may be excited about the next day. You may have awaken to use the bathroom and couldnโt go back to sleep. For whatever reason, you just lie there in the bed. You may turn on the television. Maybe God is trying to squeeze in some quality time with you before you get busy during the day. Itโs the ideal time to be close to Him. No distractions. No noise. Just you and God. You can lie there and prayโฆget on your kneesโฆget up and lift up your hands and praise GodโฆYou can go outside and adore His awesome creationโฆYou can read your bible, or even study a specific topic. God can give you fresh revelation during these intimate times. You will find yourself feeling so much closer to Him, but most of all you will please and bless Him. Best of all, you will find yourself yawning and going back into a wonderful restful sleep for the rest ot the night (or morning).
Psalm 16:7 (NKJV)
7 I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel;
My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.
Psalm 63:6 (NKJV)
6 When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
2. WHEN YOU FIRST WAKE UP
I used to be in the habit of going to the gym early in the morning to start my day. I would say a short prayer and then go โwork out my bodyโ. I ruptured my Achilles tendon one day and found myself in a boot and a cast for several months. Not much later, God cultivated out of that the practice of going outside on my porch, and spending rich quality time in prayer and praise before I do anything else. I replaced worshiping my flesh in a sense with worshiping Him. Now, you donโt have to go outside, but itโs not difficult to kneel and pray as soon as you wake up. Before you drink your coffee. Before you watch the news. Before you check your social media. I think it is a foolish thing to begin the day without submitting ourselves to and talking to God first. Even if you donโt get on your kneesโฆlie in your bedโฆget up and bow your headโฆlift up holy handsโฆjust make sure your heart is humble and your prayer is sincere and not rushed.
Psalm 63:1 (NKJV)
63 O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
3. WHEN YOU ARE USING THE BATHROOM IN THE MORNING.
This is something we all have to do when we wake up. Keep a bible in the bathroom, or use your bible app on your phone. This is another time when you are alone and can choose a verse of the day on which to meditate or even read a chapter each morning. A verse of the day is good for memory or meditation, but it should never take the place of real in-depth bible study. God doesnโt mind you making His word #1 while you do #2.
4. THANK GOD FOR AND BLESS EVERY MEAL (EVEN SNACKS)
Make it a point to thank God for every meal you eat. It doesnโt have to be a long drawn out prayer, but a sincere thank you for the awesome blessing of having food to eat. Donโt be ashamed to thank Him for your food while you are in publicโฆat lunch with co-workersโฆat a lunch meeting. Also, itโs very important to bless each meal and ask God that it nourish your body and not harm it. Much of our food we donโt prepare ourselves and we donโt know how it could harm are bodiesโฆAlways bless every meal and shack.
1 Timothy 4:4-5 (NKJV)
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
5. WHILE YOU’RE DRINKING YOUR COFFEE
Whether you have a relaxing cup of coffee, tea, juice or whatever your morning beverage may be, itโs an ideal time to read Godโs wordโฆprayโฆor even praise God each morning. What do you read or watch while you sip on your coffee? Why not make it Godโs word?
6. WHILE CHECKING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA STATUS
How many times a day do your check your social media? Many people check their’s as soon as they wake upโฆthen claim they donโt have time to read the bible. Check out what God has posted in His word before you check out whatโs going on in social media. Thereโs nothing wrong with checking you Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or whatever. Of, course there are even devotionals on there just like this one, but never let it take the place of reading and studying your bible.
7. DURING YOUR LUNCH BREAK AT WORK OR AFTERNOON BREAK
Your lunch break is your time. Why not dedicate a few moment of it, or even an entire lunch break once a week to reading and studying Godโs word. You can even volunteer at a mission or serve others in some way during your lunch break from time to time. Itโs just another opportunity to spend quality time with God during your day. To prove to Him and yourself that you really value time with Him and love Him. You will find it to be not a burden or task, but a time of refreshing and fellowship to help you stay focused and make it through the rest of the day.
8. TAKE A VACATION DAY JUST TO SPEND WITH GOD
Most of us have vacation days. Have you ever taken a vacation day just to spend in prayer, study, praise and fellowship with God? Devoting one of your vacation days to God is an awesome mini-sabbatical opportunity to grow closer to the God of our salvation through our Lord and Savior, Yeshua, Jesus Christ.
9. LISTEN TO GOSPEL MUSIC SOMETIMES OTHER THAN IN WORSHIP
Of course thereโs nothing wrong with fun music or love songs as long as they donโt contain ungodly lyrics. But, thereโs a world of good Gospel music of every genre that you can use to turn your leisure time into worship time. It doesn’t have to be a hymnal. Like my wife, Gospel Jazz Artist Mechelle Johnson (Yep thatโs a plug:-) But, good Gospel music is another way to help stay focused while you work or play.
God knows that we make time for what and who are important to us. These are just a few suggestions of how to make more time for God. Thereโs no excuse to say we are too busy for Him.
Proverbs 3:6 (NKJV)
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct[a] your paths.
In celebration of National Women’s Day and dedicated to all the women who sacrifice, married or single — snippet of My wife Mechelle Johnson covering Sade’s classic anthem, “Pearls”.
Proverbs 31:10-31 (NKJV)
10 (A)Who[a] can find a [b]virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. 15 (B)She also rises while it is yet night, And (C)provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. 16 She considers a field and buys it; From [c]her profits she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. 18 She perceives that her merchandise isgood, And her lamp does not go out by night. 19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle. 20 (D)She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet. 22 She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 (E)Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants. 25 Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: 29 โMany daughters have done well, But you excel them all.โ 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.
We have all been hurt, wronged, betrayed, mistreated, let down, disappointed. used and abused.
It’s a part of life.
Sometimes we feel we have been wronged when the other person of people actually meant no real harm.
Sometimes we feel we were wronged when the other person or persons was actually doing something for our own good.
Sometimes it’s us who was in the wrong.
In many situations we can’t change how we are treated, but we can always control how we react to when we are treated badly….ALWAYS.
So, I have a quick reminder for you. God expects to not only forgive, but have an attitude of forgiveness, even when the other person doesn’t seem as though they are sorry.
Have you ever had a person apologize to you and you weren’t ready to hear it? You want to remain angry…
YOU’RE HOLDING A GRUDGE, AND GOD AIN’T HAVING THAT!
Leviticus 19:18 (NKJV)
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God inChrist forgave you.
Romans 12:17-21 (ESV)
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, โVengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.โ To the contrary, โif your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.โ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
GRUDGE (Oxford Online Dictionary)
Noun: A persistent feeling of ill will or resentment resulting from a past insult or injury.โshe held a grudge against her former bossโ.
Grudges are birthed from pride.
Grudges require huge amounts of mental, emotional and spiritual bandwidth.
You can’t be grateful, thankful, forgiving, joyous, kind, or love the way God requires while holding a grudge.
Grudges our a spiritual drain and they ruin your testimony.
It is impossible to move forward while you hold a grudge.
The fact is…
THAT GRUDGE THAT YOU ARE HOLDING IS ACTUALLY HOLDING YOU!
How many blessings is God trying to put into your hand, but He can’t because you’re holding tightly to a grudge?
Iโve found the most intimate refreshing place to pray at my home. I love sitting in my chair on my front porch and enjoying quality time with God in prayer. When I’m out there, it’s like it’s just Him and me. Yes I pray everywhere. But, that place is special.
And yes, I said sitting.
You see, it’s good to get on your knees in submission to God, but contrary to what many may have been taught it’s not mandatory. That is not the exclusively acceptable prayer posture.
Your proper prayer posture isn’t the position of your body, but of your heart and spirit…
To a humble spirit… it’s about humility.
Psalm 51:17 (NKJV)
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heartโ These, O God, You will not despise
1- On Your Knees
Ephesians 3:14 (NKJV)
For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,[a]
2 – In Your Bed
Psalm 4:4 (NKJV)
Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.
3 – Out Loud
Psalm 34:6 (NKJV)
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
4 – Silently
1 Samuel 1:13 (NKJV)
13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.
5 – Hands Lifted
1 Timothy 2:8 (NKJV)
I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;
6 – Eyes Open
John 17:1 (NKJV)
Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: โFather, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,
7 – Head Bowed
Genesis 24:26 (NKJV)
26 Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the Lord.
8 – Prostrate
Matthew 26:39 (NKJV)
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, โO My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.โ
9 – Standing
Mark 11:25 (NKJV)
โAnd whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
God just wants you to be humble. Many have even misunderstood โcome boldlyโ in the book of Hebrewsโฆ
Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV)
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
It’s not about ‘telling God what to do’, but direct access to Him. We don’t have to go through a priest, or a preacher to talk to Him…just submit to Him humbly in prayer through our Lord and Savior Yeshua, Jesus Christ.
So, bow your head, lie in your bed, fall on your knees, lift up your hands, as long as you’re sincere…God will hear.
Thereโs thin line between narcissism and good health…between being healthy and vanity.
Between discipline and self worship…
Between keeping your temple healthy for God and provoking others to lust or envy…
Between putting in hard work and eating right and being lazy by wanting a โmagicโ pill to do all the work.
Thereโs nothing wrong with exercise and eating right in an effort to be healthy and even look good, but we must be honest with ourselves about our motives.
What are you thinking about while youโre runningโฆlifting weights…at the gymโฆtaking that โweight lossโ pill? Are your thinking about how HEALTHY you will be or how SEXY you will be?
Do we put as much effort into making sure our spirit looks good to God as we put into making sure our bodies looks good in our clothes (or out of them)?
Yes, thereโs a thin line between narcissism and good health.
Hereโs Proof!
Think about the commercials and ads that you see and hear…
Companies spend millions of dollars on research to gain insights advertise on what’s important to consumers. What drives people? What provokes them to make a buying decision.
How many gyms, spas, fitness centers, diet plans, diet pills etc. do you hear advertising about BEING HEALTHY?
Most of the time their pitch isโฆ
Look good!
Be sexy!
Look younger!
Sexy abs.
Sexy bun.
Sculpted arms.
You rarely if ever hear or see ads that say…
Get your blood pressure under control!
Reduce your cholesterol!
Surprise your doctor!
How about this one? How many times have you heard them simply sayโฆ
โFeel better!”
Most of the time they are trying to appeal to our sense of vanity.
God wants us to be healthy, as well as look healthy, but we must be very careful that we donโt let our societyโs obsession with youth, looking good and being sexy pervert our motives.
We canโt let our workout routines and habits turn into our personal rituals of worshipping ourselves.
Remember what the bible saysโฆ
1 Timothy 4:8 (NKJV)
8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
In His darkest moment, those closest to Him abandoned Himโฆ
Matthew 26:31 (NKJV)
Then Jesus said to them, โAll of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: โI will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.โ
But, I think that Jesus was cool with that. I know He wasnโt surprised. It was prophesied and He knew they would all scatter.
He knew Peter would follow, but far away. He knew he would deny Him three times to the point of cursingโฆ
Matthew 26:74
Then he began to curse and swear, saying, โI do not know the Man!โ
Many times, in the comfort and conveniences of our 21st Century lifestyles, we will read about or hear in a sermon about the disciples scattering and deserting Jesus just before He went to the cross. We may even think to ourselves, โWhat a shameโ.
We may wonder what we would have done had we been in that situation. I can quickly and confidently answer thatโฆwe would have done the same thing.
How do I know that?
Because it was Godโs will that they scatter.
What could they have done to prevent Jesusโ crucifixion? Nothingโฆbecause it was Godโs will.
What good would it have done if they had died with Him, because thatโs exactly what would have happened had they stood with Him.
Had they stood with Jesus at that time and were crucified with Him, how would we have gotten the Gospels? Who would have told us of what they experienced while they were with Him?
He was preparing them to spread the Gospel, not to die with Him.
He was preparing them to GOโฆ.not DIEโฆ.at least not yet.
Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Think about it like thisโฆ
Jesus could have stayed here longer. He could have put off the cross until His disciples were strongerโฆbut He didnโt.
Jesus left them while they were WEAK enough to scatter and desert Him, but STRONG enough to get it back together and continue.
I believe that Christ was glad they scattered.
So, stop worrying about those who haveโฆ
Left youโฆ
Abandoned youโฆ
Deserted youโฆ
Ignored youโฆor
Betrayed you.
Stop and look for God in it.
The next time that someone leaves youโฆlook for God in it.
And, remember, that sometimes we must share in His sufferingsโฆ
Romans 8:17 (NKJV)
And if children, then heirsโheirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Yes, they scattered and deserted Him, but thatโs not how the story endedโฆAnd, thatโs why I believe that Jesus was glad they left Him alone.
Has anyone ever embarrassed, hurt or insulted you openly in public? Have you ever done so? Have you ever made public some information about someone later to find out that information was wrong? Have you ever defamed or slandered someone?
For whatever reason, we all openly hurt one another from time to time. Sometimes we do it on purpose, and sometimes it’s unintentional. These ‘public displays of ‘non-affection’ can leave bad impressions and potentially ruin reputations of all parties involved.
Many times when we realize what we’ve done, truly feel sorry and want to apologize. We’ll pull the person or persons to the side and tell them, “I’m sorry… I was wrong”.
This is good but not good enough…
Acts 16:37 (NKJV)
37 But Paul said to them, โThey have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.โ
Those who heard or witnessed the embarrassment may still think you were right. Those who heard or witnessed the insult may still be influenced by what you did or said…that public embarrassment deserves a public apology.
I remember growing up in church that sometimes in testimonies, people would stand before the church and proclaim, “If I’ve ever done anything to hurt anyone here today, I’m sorry”…if you know who you hurt and what you did, this also is not good enough.
If you know that you slapped someone in the face, simply saying, “I’m sorry IF I hurt you” isn’t enough. If you slandered someone, making a blanket statement to a group that, “If I hurt SOMEONE, I’m sorry” is just not enough.
If you know what you did and who you did it to, then you need to show enough respect to call out their name.
It’s good to apologize, but if we aren’t careful, we can take the easy way out and not fully respect the person or persons that we have hurt.
Matthew 5:23-24 (NKJV)
23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Never take for granted how clever the enemy is at trying to
come between us and the God of our salvation.
He has been busy at trying to influence the lives of Godโs
children for thousands of years. The bible tells us that he disguises himself
as an angel of lightโฆ
2 Corinthians
11:13-15 (NKJV)
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan
himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no
great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of
righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
He is a deceiver and the father of all liesโฆ
As you may already know, the very word devil comes from the
Greek word diablos meaning slanderer, accusing falsely, deceiver. Even Jesus
calls him out when rebuking the religious leadersโฆ
John 8:44
(NKJV)
44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires
of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does
not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie,
he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of
it.
One of his favorite methods is to use us (most of the time unintentionally)
against the oneโs we love.
He disguises himself inside of sincere love and good
intentions. Remember how Yeshua, Christ Jesus, responded to Peter when he spoke
up in what he thought was support of Jesusโฆ
Matthew 16:21-23
(NKJV)
21 From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must
go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, [a]โFar be it from You, Lord; this shall not
happen to You!โ
23 But He turned and said to Peter, โGet behind Me, Satan! You
are [b]an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of
the things of God, but the things of men.โ
Jesus didnโt even address Peter. He addressed the enemy
directly.
Think of the fact that the enemy used Eve to get to Adam and
Adam quickly shifted the blame to his wifeโฆ
Genesis 3:12-13
(NKJV)
12 Then the man said, โThe woman whom You gave to be with
me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.โ
13 And the Lord God said to the woman, โWhat is this
you have done?โ
The woman
said, โThe serpent deceived me, and I ate.โ
Wow! So, how many times has that happened to us in our
lives?
How many times has the enemy used husbands, wives, sons and daughters
to distract their loved ones from their focus on Godโs word?
How many times have you seen a loved one being misused and
instead of telling them to turn the other cheek, you told them to retaliate?
How many times has someone been ready to speak up against
sin, wrong or injustice and because of the certain backlash a loved one said, โYou
better leave that aloneโ.
How many times have we held a love one back who was maturing
and growing in Christ because of the changes it would force us to make?
How many times has a loved one wanted to give help to someone
in need and we discouraged themโฆfor whatever reason?
How many times have we hurt or hated someone because they
hurt or hated someone we love?
How many times has a loved one given bad advice contrary to
the word of God from their flesh?
How many traditions that God has forbidden have we allowed
to continue through thousands of generations because we felt we were letting
our children miss out on something?
Once when I spoke up against the sin of homosexuality, a
family member told me (just for the record, it was not my wife), โYou better leave
that subject alone because if might make some people angry and prevent your
music and your ministry from being acceptedโ
This relative didnโt mean any harm. They made that statement
out of genuine concern for me, but they were being just like Peter. God wants
me to trust Him with my ministry and music despite what people may say or do.
Can you think of a time when the devil used a loved one
against you? Can you think of a time you have do so?
The good news is that God has given us discernment, so the
enemy doesnโt catch us by surpriseโฆ
2 Corinthians 2:11
(NKJV)
11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his
devices.
Be very careful of your โPeterโ moments. Donโt let the enemy
use you against the people in your life.
It’s been said that “hurt people, hurt people”. How many times has someone hurt you…disrespected you…betrayed you…embarrassed you…abused you, or hurt, disrespected, betrayed, embarrassed, or abused someone you love — and you wanted to see them hurt too?
You want to see them experience the same pain that they caused. You want them to know how you feel, and regret how they treated you or your loved one. This is wrong, but this is natural and one of the burdens of our sinful nature.
There is a classic example of this in the bible. Easu, Isaac’s first born twin, was enraged at is brother Jacob for taking his birthright and stealing his blessing…
Genesis 25:29-34 (NKJV)
29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, โPlease feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.โ Therefore his name was called [a]Edom.
31 But Jacob said, โSell me your birthright as of this day.โ
32 And Esau said, โLook, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?โ
33 Then Jacob said, [b]โSwear to me as of this day.โ
So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Genesis 27:1-29 (NKJV)
27 Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim thathe could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, โMy son.โ
And he answered him, โHere I am.โ
2 Then he said, โBehold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death. 3 Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me. 4 And make me [a]savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.โ
5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it.6 So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, โIndeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, 7 โBring me game and make [b]savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.โ 8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he may bless you before his death.โ
11And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, โLook, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man. 12 Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing.โ
13 But his mother said to him, โLet your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.โ 14 And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made [c]savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
18 So he went to his father and said, โMy father.โ
And he said, โHere I am. Who are you, my son?โ
19 Jacob said to his father, โI am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.โ
20 But Isaac said to his son, โHow is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?โ
And he said, โBecause the Lord your God brought it to me.โ
21 Isaac said to Jacob, โPlease come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.โ 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, โThe voice is Jacobโs voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.โ 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esauโs hands; so he blessed him.
24 Then he said, โAre you really my son Esau?โ
He said, โI am.โ
25 He said, โBring it nearto me, and I will eat of my sonโs game, so that my soul may bless you.โ So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, โCome near now and kiss me, my son.โ 27 And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:
โSurely, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field Which the Lord has blessed. 28 Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven, Of the fatness of the earth, And plenty of grain and wine. 29 Let peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, And let your motherโs sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, And blessed be those who bless you!โ
So, because of this, Esau comforted himself daydreaming about killing his brother…
Genesis 27:42 (NKJV)
42 And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, โSurely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.
Even if you didn’t want to see them killed, how many times have you comforted yourself with the thought of seeing someone else hurt?
Be careful! When you judge in your heart that someone else deserves pain because of the pain they caused…that’s condemnation and judgement. And, we all know what the bible says about when we judge (condemn) someone else…
Matthew 7:1-2 (NKJV)
7 โJudge[a] not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what [b]judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
You are pronouncing that judgment on yourself!
Remember, we have all hurt, disrespected, betrayed, embarrassed, or abused someone. Even if we didn’t intend to do so, their pain was real.
When those thoughts enter your head, immediately ask God to forgive you, then pray and ask God to forgive them and touch their hearts with His love. Bless them…
Luke 6:28-36 (NKJV)
28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
32 โBut if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, [a]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
The enemy whispers in your year, “What’s the use?”
When you feel no strength remains,
Pray for God’s peace, and trust Him with your pain.
Think of everything He’s already brought you through,
Cast all of your cares on Him, for God cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7 (NKJV)
6ย Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,ย 7ย casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Please allow me to sub-title this piece, “JUST LIKE JUDAS”, since I couldn’t make up my mind.
Many of us shake our heads in self-righteous shame at Judas betraying our Lord and Savior for 30 pieces of silver.
But, if we think back on our lives, sometimes we don’t have to think very far back, we will realize that we have betrayed Him for what was many times much less.
Each time we sinโฆ Each time we know right from wrongโฆEach time that we know His holy standardโฆEach time we have a clear choice and think, โNo I should not do thisโ, and then choose to do it anyway, we betray Him just like Judas did.
Those seeking to put Jesus to open shame and kill Him presented Judas was with a transaction, and he agreed to a price to accept the transaction.
Matthew 26:15 (NKJV)
15 and said, โWhat are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?โ And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.
The enemy daily presents us with transactions (usually through our desires) seeking to hurtโฆto discreditโฆto put to open shame our Savior Jesus, and daily we accept them โ and consequently betray Him.
James 1:14 (NKJV)
14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.
So, how much have you accepted to betray Jesus?
What transaction does the enemy prevent to you to convince you to sin?
What level of attention?
What level of affection?
What level of influence?
What level of affluence?
What level of pleasure?
What level of revenge?
Who was it?
What was it?
Was it only a kiss?
Was it only a promotion?
Was it only a glance?
Was it only a taste?
Was it only a touch?
Was it a laugh?
Was it a whisper?
Or, did you do it for free because you were angry at Him?
Did the enemy use you as the ‘middle man’ to provoke someone else to betray Him?
Itโs not hard to identify how the enemy manipulates and provokes us to betray Him. The bible makes it clear. Itโs usuallyโฆ
1 John 2:16 (NKJV)
16 For all that is in the worldโthe lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of lifeโis not of the Father but is of the world.
Always remember that Judas realized the 30 pieces of silver weren’t worth it, and wanted to give it back. It’s the same for us today the enemy pays you to hurt our Lord, but the ultimate wage is horrible…
Romans 6:23 (NKJV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So, at the end of each day, thank God for His grace and mercy to forgive us when we repent. Then think about the choices that youโve made and ask yourself a powerful question to help you refine your walk and relationship with Christ. Think about the spiritual transactions youโve made and ask yourselfโฆ
